Veracruz Amphibious Landing — Largest US Seaborne Assault

| Mexico-US Wars

General Winfield Scott's army of 12,000 men landed on the beaches south of Veracruz in specially designed surf boats — the largest amphibious operation in US history to that date. The landing itself was unopposed. Scott's forces encircled the walled city and its castle of San Juan de Ulúa in preparation for a siege. The operation was a masterpiece of joint army-navy coordination, planned meticulously by Scott and Captain Robert E. Lee.
