Battle of Sacramento — Doniphan Takes Chihuahua

| Mexico-US Wars

Doniphan's 900 Missouri Volunteers and a train of 300+ trade wagons defeated a 4,000-man Mexican force entrenched on the Sacramento River north of Chihuahua City. US horse artillery devastated the Mexican position and a cavalry charge completed the rout. Doniphan captured Chihuahua City the following day, having marched nearly 2,000 miles from Fort Leavenworth in one of the most remarkable campaigns in American military history.
