Battle of Gonzales — 'Come and Take It'

| Mexico-US Wars

Mexican soldiers attempted to reclaim a small bronze cannon loaned to settlers at Gonzales, Texas. Texan colonists refused, raised a defiant flag reading 'Come and Take It,' and repelled the Mexican detachment in a brief skirmish. Widely considered the opening engagement of the Texas Revolution, the cannon remained in Texan hands.
