Lebanese Army Commander Opens Post-UNIFIL Transition File with UN Official in Beirut
Lebanon's Army Commander met with a senior UN official in Beirut on May 20 to formally open discussions on post-UNIFIL arrangements for the Lebanese Armed Forces' future role in southern Lebanon. With the UNIFIL mandate set to expire on December 31, 2026, followed by a one-year drawdown, the Lebanese military is planning to assume full responsibility for Blue Line monitoring and security south of the Litani River. The Commander stressed the need for continued international support — including equipment, training, and funding — to enable the Lebanese Armed Forces to fill the security vacuum that will follow UNIFIL's departure. The talks were part of broader coordination with the UN Secretariat on transition planning, and occurred against a backdrop of ongoing Israeli airstrikes and Hezbollah drone attacks that complicate any orderly handover of security responsibilities.
