CBO and Pentagon Inspector General Put Iran War Cost at $33.4B–$38.1B, Cite Munitions Depletion and Base Damage

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the Iran war has cost the Pentagon $38.1 billion through Aug 1, 2026, projecting a further $2-3 billion per month of continued fighting, while a separate Pentagon Inspector General report to Congress put the cost through June 29 at $33.4 billion for munitions replacement, equipment restoration and operations. The Pentagon IG report said Iranian strikes 'damaged and destroyed hundreds of buildings and structures' at US bases across eight regional countries, and that roughly 60 US aircraft have been damaged or destroyed; it separately flagged depletion of roughly two-thirds of the US stockpile of Patriot, THAAD, SM-3 and SM-6 interceptors, warning of a five-year replenishment timeline. The CBO also projected the war's spending would add roughly 0.5 percentage points to US inflation in early 2027.
