Magyar Departs for Brussels to Sign EU RRF Deal; Sulyok May 31 Deadline Approaches
PM Péter Magyar traveled to Brussels on May 25 for high-stakes meetings aimed at finalizing the political agreement to unlock €10.4 billion in frozen Recovery and Resilience Facility funds. The trip — confirmed on May 23 as planned for the week beginning May 25 — includes meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Belgian PM Bart De Wever. The August 31 RRF deadline makes the signing critical: if Hungary does not reach a funded agreement before that date, billions in EU recovery money are permanently forfeited. The Magyar government's national development programme — a prerequisite for finalizing the agreement — was due for submission by end-of-May. The Brussels trip unfolds simultaneously with the approach of the self-imposed May 31 deadline for President Tamás Sulyok to resign; the government must decide within days whether to accept Sulyok's defiance or initiate formal impeachment proceedings using Tisza's 141-seat supermajority.
