Magyar Confirms Brussels EU Deal Trip; Plans to Halve Own Salary
On May 23, PM Péter Magyar confirmed his Brussels trip for the week ahead to finalize the political agreement on unlocking €10.4 billion in RRF funds. The trip would include meetings with EC President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Belgian PM Bart De Wever. Magyar also announced plans to voluntarily halve his own prime ministerial salary as a symbolic gesture of austerity, noting that 'a leader who calls on citizens to make sacrifices must set the example.' The European Commission's 27 'super-milestones' — covering anti-corruption measures, EPPO membership, judicial independence, and procurement reform — remained the substantive benchmark for any funds release. Analysts noted that with the August 31 RRF deadline approaching and Hungary's national development programme due by end-of-May, the Brussels trip represented the most consequential meeting of the Magyar government's first weeks in office.
