'Child Protection' Law Bans LGBTQ Content for Minors — EU Launches Challenge

| Hungary

On June 15, 2021, Hungary's parliament passed a law banning content depicting or promoting homosexuality or gender reassignment for anyone under 18, linking LGBTQ themes to pedophilia in its preamble. The law also banned LGBTQ content in school education and advertising. EU Commission President von der Leyen called it 'a shame' and launched infringement proceedings. Seventeen EU leaders signed a joint letter condemning it. The CJEU issued a partial ruling finding audiovisual provisions violated EU law in October 2022. Orbán announced a concurrent referendum on the law.
