Fidesz Wins Fourth Consecutive Supermajority Despite United Opposition

| Hungary

On April 3, 2022, Fidesz-KDNP won 54.13% of the vote and 135 of 199 seats — its best ever result — securing a fourth consecutive two-thirds supermajority. The election was held 39 days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine; Orbán ran on a 'peace and security' platform against the united six-party opposition coalition led by Péter Márki-Zay. OSCE/ODIHR found 'a fundamental imbalance' in the campaign with 'no equal opportunity to compete.' EU simultaneously froze €7.5B in cohesion funds citing rule-of-law concerns.
