Fidesz Quits EPP After 27 Years — End of Center-Right Alliance
On March 3, 2021, Fidesz quit the European People's Party group after 27 years of membership, just days before the EPP was set to vote on rule changes enabling expulsion of member parties by simple majority — a rule clearly aimed at Fidesz. The exit ended Fidesz's role in the EU's largest political family and marked its definitive break with mainstream European center-right politics. Fidesz subsequently sat as non-attached MEPs before aligning with the Patriots for Europe group formed in 2024 around Orbán, French RN, and Austrian FPÖ.
