UN OHCHR Report: 5,519 Killed in Haiti, Gangs Expand Beyond Port-au-Prince
The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) released a major report on March 24, 2026 documenting that at least 5,519 people were killed and 2,608 injured in Haiti between March 1, 2025 and January 15, 2026. Violence by security forces accounted for 3,497 deaths—more than twice the 1,424 killed directly by gangs. The report flagged 247 instances of actual or attempted summary executions by police, resulting in 196 deaths. Gangs have expanded beyond Port-au-Prince into the Artibonite and Centre departments, with one in four Haitians now living under gang control. At least 1,571 women and girls were victims of sexual violence—mostly gang rape—between March and December 2025. A private military company hired by the Haitian government has conducted drone strikes and helicopter gunfire operations since March 2025, with the OHCHR noting these could constitute targeted killings. UN High Commissioner Volker Türk called for authorities to 'provide security while fully upholding human rights.'
