First MSS Casualty: Kenyan Officer Killed

Kenyan police officer Samuel Tompei Kaetuai became the first MSS fatality, killed in a gunfight with gang members in Port-au-Prince on February 24, 2025. The death underscored the mission's operational difficulties: gangs possessed assault rifles, heavy weapons, and armored vehicles, in many cases outgunning the MSS. The mission had by this point deployed approximately 989 personnel, less than 40% of the authorized strength.
