IDF Strike Kills PIJ Operative in Shati Camp; Military Discloses Mid-Air Munition Diversion

The IDF said a strike on Sunday, September 6, 2026 in the Al-Shati (Beach) refugee camp area of Gaza City killed Sabhi Khader al-Hashem al-Batrihi, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative it said had planted explosive devices targeting Israeli troops, in what it called a 'systematic violation of the ceasefire.' The military separately disclosed killing Ahmad Fuad Khalil Khalas, identified as a member of Hamas's elite Nukhba Force who also planted bombs, in a different recent strike; over the past week the IDF said at least 14 operatives were eliminated in Gaza strikes, including five Nukhba company commanders and five platoon commanders. The IDF said it took steps to mitigate civilian harm before the strikes, including precise munitions and aerial surveillance, and disclosed that during one recent Gaza strike it diverted a munition mid-air after identifying civilians near the targeted operative: since the munition could not be aborted after release, 'it was redirected in real time in order to prevent it from striking civilians.'
