Hamas–BoP Negotiations Reach Impasse in Cairo Over Disarmament; UN Envoy Warns of 'Dangerous Status Quo'
Ceasefire negotiations between Hamas's delegation and the Board of Peace (BoP) delegation led by UN High Representative Nickolay Mladenov reached an impasse in Cairo around May 21, 2026. Hamas continued to reject total disarmament demands, insisting the IDF pull back from the Yellow Line as a precondition for any demilitarization discussions. Mladenov warned in his UN Security Council briefing that failure to reach agreement would entrench a 'dangerous status quo' leaving two million Palestinians without a viable future. The IDF separately reported 19 ceasefire violations between April 21 and May 5, 2026. The October 2025 Trump-brokered ceasefire technically remains in effect but with ongoing combat operations — analysts warned Gaza risks permanent territorial division with Israel entrenching control over more than 64% of the Strip.
