UN Formally Demands Israel Release Detained Flotilla Activists as Both Reported on Hunger Strike
The United Nations issued a formal demand on May 6, 2026 for Israel to immediately release the two Gaza flotilla activists — Thiago Avila (Brazil) and Saif Abu Keshek (Spain) — who remained in Israeli custody following the IDF's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla on April 29–30. The UN cited 'disturbing accounts' of severe mistreatment, noting that both activists were on a hunger strike consuming only water, endured 24-hour high-intensity lighting, were blindfolded during movement, and were held in total isolation. An Ashkelon Magistrate's Court had extended their detention on May 4 amid torture allegations. Israel's Foreign Ministry denied torture, stating all interrogation measures were lawful. No release date was set as of May 6. The detentions continued to draw condemnation from Spain, Brazil, Amnesty International, and the International Federation for Human Rights, with 11 nations having signed a joint statement condemning the flotilla interception as an act of piracy in international waters.
