Flotilla Activists Appear in Israeli Court, Allege Torture in Custody
Activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla who remain in Israeli custody appeared in an Israeli court on May 3, 2026. The activists alleged torture and mistreatment while detained following the IDF's interception of the flotilla in international waters on April 29–30. The flotilla was intercepted approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza — the farthest IDF interception on record. Of 175 activists originally detained, 168 were disembarked in Crete on May 1; the remaining activists taken to Israel for questioning are now facing legal proceedings. The allegations of torture in custody drew condemnation from international human rights groups and added to the diplomatic fallout following the interception, which had already prompted a joint condemnation by 11 nations including Spain, Turkey, Brazil, and South Africa.
