ICJ Genocide Case Update: Multiple New Interventions; Israel Filed Counter-Memorial March 12
The International Court of Justice genocide case (South Africa v. Israel) advanced in March 2026 with several significant developments. Israel filed its counter-memorial on March 12 after two extensions were granted. Multiple countries filed declarations of intervention: Namibia, Fiji, Netherlands, Iceland, and Paraguay all formally notified the court in March 2026. Notably, Germany withdrew from the case during March 2026. As of March 27, the ICJ had not yet scheduled oral hearings on the merits, with analysts anticipating proceedings possible in late 2026 or 2027. The earlier March 22 ICJ provisional measure ordering Israel to ensure basic needs of Gaza's population were met and to support UNRWA operations remained pending Israeli compliance review. The Netherlands, South Africa, Belgium, and other states continued to press Israel on implementation of provisional measures.
