TEPCO Begins Removing Fuel Assemblies from Unit 2 Spent Fuel Pool

| Fukushima

TEPCO began transferring fuel assemblies out of Unit 2's spent fuel storage pool on June 2, 2026, using a purpose-built fuel handling facility with remote-operated equipment rather than dismantling the reactor building. A total of 615 assemblies (587 used, 28 unused) are stored in the pool; TEPCO expects the full transfer to a common fuel pool elsewhere on site to be completed during fiscal year 2028 (ending March 2029). Units 3, 4, and 6 have already completed spent fuel removal; Unit 5 removal has been underway since July 2025. Unit 1 fuel removal is planned to begin as early as April 2027, pending completion of rubble clearance.
