Notre-Dame Cathedral Engulfed in Fire
A devastating fire destroys the 19th-century spire and most of the lead roof of Notre-Dame Cathedral during renovation work. The medieval rose windows and main stone structure survive. Millions watch the broadcast worldwide. President Macron pledges to rebuild within five years; over €840 million is pledged in 48 hours. The cathedral reopens in December 2024 after a €700 million restoration.
