Channel Tunnel Opens — France and Britain Linked

The Channel Tunnel (Eurotunnel), linking Coquelles near Calais to Folkestone in England, is officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and President Mitterrand. At 50.5 km, it is the world's longest undersea tunnel. The tunnel carries Eurostar passenger trains, Le Shuttle vehicle trains, and freight services, transforming cross-channel travel and commerce.
