Napoleon Crowned Emperor at Notre-Dame
In a ceremony at Notre-Dame Cathedral attended by Pope Pius VII, Napoleon crowns himself Emperor of the French, symbolically demonstrating that his power derives from himself rather than the Church. The ceremony is immortalized in Jacques-Louis David's enormous painting. Napoleon's empire at its height controls most of continental Europe, imposing French legal, administrative, and military systems across subject territories.
