2006 Presidential Election — Virtual Tie Between Calderón and AMLO
Mexico's presidential election produces a near-tie between PAN candidate Felipe Calderón and PRD/Por el Bien de Todos candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The IFE refuses to declare a winner on election night. Both candidates claim victory. AMLO claims he holds at least a 500,000-vote lead. The PRI's Roberto Madrazo comes third with approximately 22% of the vote. Fox's pre-election statement 'haiga sido como haiga sido' (whatever it was, it was) about the vote count is widely criticized as inappropriate interference.
