Péter Magyar Sworn in as Hungary's Prime Minister — EU Flag Raised on Budapest Parliament for First Time Since 2014

| European Union

Péter Magyar (Tisza party) was sworn in as Hungary's new Prime Minister on May 9, 2026 — Europe Day — following his landslide victory in the April 12 parliamentary elections that ended Viktor Orbán's 16-year grip on power. Magyar's party won an outright parliamentary majority (141 of 199 seats). In a deeply symbolic act, the EU flag was raised on the Hungarian parliament building in Budapest for the first time since 2014, when Orbán had removed it. Magyar's government immediately signalled intent to normalise relations with EU institutions, unlock approximately €17 billion in frozen EU cohesion and Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) funds by undoing laws incompatible with EU standards, and end Hungary's systematic vetoes of EU decisions on Ukraine, sanctions, and enlargement. The timing on Europe Day — the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration — was deliberate. EU institutional leaders, including Commission President von der Leyen and Council President Costa, sent congratulatory messages and expressed eagerness to begin a 'new chapter' in EU-Hungary relations.
