EU Migration Pact Progress Report — Key Pillars in Place Ahead of June 12 Application Date

| European Union

The European Commission published a comprehensive progress report on implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, concluding that member states have made 'significant advances' with the 'key pillars of the new system now in place.' The Pact is set to enter into application on June 12, 2026 — five weeks from the report's publication. Illegal border crossings at EU external borders fell 26% in 2025 compared to 2024, attributed in part to enhanced Frontex operations and bilateral agreements. Outstanding work identified by the Commission includes: full operationalisation of the Eurodac biometric database, establishment of border procedure reception facilities in frontline member states, and activation of the mandatory solidarity pool mechanism. Czechia was reported to be still racing to align its screening and reception procedures ahead of the deadline, while Hungary under new PM Magyar's government had signalled willingness to implement the Pact after years of obstruction under Orbán.
