EU Council Approves €90 Billion Ukraine Loan — Hungary Lifts Veto

| European Union

The EU Council formally adopted the final legislative package underpinning a €90 billion EU loan to Ukraine — the largest single financial commitment to a third country in EU history. The package comprises €30 billion in macro-financial and budget support and €60 billion for defence procurement. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had blocked the measure for months but lifted his veto following the repair of a Russian-damaged pipeline in a bilateral agreement with Ukraine. The first disbursements were expected in late May–early June 2026. The decision came weeks before Orbán's electoral defeat and replacement by Péter Magyar.
