European Parliament Elections — Far-Right Surge

| European Union

European Parliament elections were held across 27 EU member states. The centre-right European People's Party (EPP) remained the largest group with 188 seats. The far-right and nationalist groups gained significantly, with ECR and ID parties growing their combined vote share. The results led to weeks of coalition negotiations for the new Parliament's leadership. Ursula von der Leyen was nominated for a second term as Commission President and approved by Parliament in July 2024.
