Ukraine and Moldova Granted EU Candidate Status

The European Council unanimously agreed to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukraine had applied within days of the invasion; the Commission recommended candidate status in June 2022. The decision represented a historic acceleration of enlargement policy. Accession negotiations with Ukraine were formally opened in June 2024.
