EU AI Act Passed — World's First Comprehensive AI Regulation
The European Parliament adopted the Artificial Intelligence Act by 523 votes to 46, the world's first comprehensive legal framework regulating AI systems. The Act classifies AI applications by risk level (unacceptable, high, limited, minimal) and imposes obligations accordingly. It bans certain uses including real-time biometric surveillance in public spaces and social scoring by governments. Large general-purpose AI models (GPAIs) face transparency and copyright obligations. The regulation enters full force from August 2026.
