DRC Ebola Cases Climb to 6,342, Deaths to 3,072 as Fastest-Ever Outbreak Continues

The ECDC's Ebola outbreak tracker, updated 4 September 2026 with data through 2 September, put DRC's confirmed toll at 6,342 cases and 3,072 deaths — a rise of 92 confirmed cases and 33 deaths since the prior report, with new cases concentrated in Ituri (60), North Kivu (25), Haut-Uélé (5) and Tshopo (2). Ituri province remains the epicenter with 5,164 cases and 2,342 deaths across 28 of 36 health zones, while North Kivu has recorded 913 cases and 614 deaths across 15 of 34 health zones. The outbreak, caused by Bundibugyo virus and declared a PHEIC in May, remains the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic ever recorded and the second-largest by case count on record, behind only the 2014-16 West Africa epidemic. As of the update, 1,475 patients have recovered and 770 remain hospitalized in isolation, with 86.5% of identified contacts under active follow-up across 60 of 151 health zones in six provinces — down slightly from 88% in the prior report even as the outbreak's total footprint held steady with no new health zones added.
