North Kivu Ebola Toll Hits 875 Cases, 609 Deaths — 70% Fatality Rate, Far Above National Average
The North Kivu provincial Ebola response coordination reported 20 new confirmed cases on 1 September 2026 — 6 in Butembo, 5 in Katwa, 4 in Beni, and the remainder in Maseraka, Lubero, Mabalako and Manguredjipa — bringing the province's cumulative total to 875 cases and 609 deaths, a 70% case fatality rate well above the roughly 48% national average. Of the cumulative total, 86 patients have recovered and 159 cases remain active, while 21 individuals tied to the outbreak are displaced or in hiding. Katwa health zone remains the hardest-hit in the province with 393 cases and 284 deaths, followed by Butembo and Beni. Fifteen of North Kivu's 34 health zones are now affected. Contact tracing teams are actively following more than 7,400 of 8,300 identified contacts, a 90% follow-up rate. The update came as DRC's national tally, per the ECDC tracker, stood at 6,342 confirmed cases and 3,072 deaths as of 2 September.
