Attacks on Ebola Treatment Centers Intensifying in Eastern DRC
Al Jazeera reported on 24 May 2026 that attacks on Ebola treatment facilities in eastern DRC were intensifying, with multiple incidents across Ituri Province in the preceding 72 hours. Following the Rwampara ETU fire (May 21) and Mongbwalu ETU fire (May 22), additional security incidents were reported in Djugu Territory. WHO and MSF issued joint calls for international pressure on armed groups operating in Ituri to guarantee the safety of health workers and treatment facilities. MONUSCO confirmed it had deployed additional armed escorts for response teams, but acknowledged that its mandate limited deep deployments into active conflict zones. The attacks represented a pattern consistent with the 2018–2020 Kivu outbreak, when ETU attacks prolonged the response by months.
