US Embassy Kampala Issues Health Alert as WHO Raises DRC Risk to Very High

| Ebola

The US Embassy in Kampala, Uganda, issued a Health Alert on 22 May 2026 advising US citizens to avoid healthcare facilities that have treated Ebola patients, practice heightened hygiene, and avoid contact with symptomatic individuals. The alert came as WHO formally upgraded DRC's risk classification to 'Very High' — the highest level — and maintained the regional risk at 'High.' Uganda's risk was classified as 'Moderate' given that all five confirmed Ugandan cases were imported from DRC with no documented local transmission in Kampala contacts. The State Department separately updated worldwide caution notices with enhanced Ebola-specific screening guidance for travelers from DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan.
