DRC Ebola Death Toll Passes 3,000 as Confirmed Cases Reach 6,186

|DRC Conflict

DRC's Institut National de Santé Publique reported Sept 2 that the Bundibugyo-virus Ebola outbreak had passed 3,000 deaths for the first time — 3,007 deaths among 6,186 confirmed cases (case fatality rate 48.6%), with 1,409 recoveries. The milestone came days after the outbreak topped 6,000 confirmed cases on Aug 31, reinforcing its status as DRC's largest and deadliest Ebola epidemic on record, ahead of the 2018-2020 outbreak's 3,317 cases, and the second-deadliest globally after the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic. The outbreak, declared a public health emergency in mid-May in Ituri, continues to spread across six provinces amid insecurity, displacement and a still-unapproved vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain.
