DRC Suspends 11 Universities in M23-Held Goma and Bukavu

Kinshasa ordered the suspension of academic activities for the 2026-2027 year at 11 public universities and higher-learning institutes in AFC/M23-controlled North and South Kivu — including UNIGOM in Goma and the Official University of Bukavu — after M23 installed new management committees at several Bukavu campuses on Aug 12. The government called the move "targeted and temporary"; AFC/M23 coordinator Corneille Nangaa denounced it Aug 28 as "intellectual genocide" and said the group would keep campuses running under its own arrangements.
