Raúl Castro Retires as Communist Party First Secretary

Raúl Castro stepped down as First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party at the 8th Party Congress, handing leadership to Díaz-Canel. It was the first time since 1959 that neither Castro brother held the top party position. Raúl, 89, remained an influential figure and member of the party's Central Committee, ending the Castro era in formal leadership.
