Díaz-Canel Becomes Cuba's President

| Cuba

Miguel Díaz-Canel was elected President of Cuba's Council of State, replacing Raúl Castro and becoming the first person outside the Castro family to lead Cuba since 1959. Raúl retained his post as Communist Party First Secretary until 2021. Díaz-Canel, a party loyalist, was seen as a continuity figure rather than a reformer.
