Fidel Castro Transfers Power to Raúl
Following emergency intestinal surgery, Fidel Castro provisionally transferred presidential powers to his brother Raúl, ending 47 years of direct rule. Fidel never returned to power. On February 24, 2008, Raúl Castro was formally elected President of Cuba by the National Assembly, marking the first peaceful transfer of power in Cuba's post-revolution history.
