Black Saturday — Closest to Nuclear War
On the most dangerous day of the crisis, a U-2 was shot down over Cuba, killing Major Rudolf Anderson — the only combat death of the crisis. A Soviet submarine near Cuba nearly launched a nuclear torpedo after losing communications. That evening, Kennedy and Khrushchev privately agreed: Soviets would remove missiles, US would pledge not to invade Cuba and secretly remove Jupiter missiles from Turkey.
