First Agrarian Reform Law
Castro signed the First Agrarian Reform Law, limiting landholdings to 1,000 acres and expropriating large estates for redistribution to peasants and cooperatives. The law nationalized approximately 40% of Cuba's arable land. US companies and Cuban landowners were offered compensation bonds, which most rejected as insufficient.
