Norway's New-Car Market Hits World-Record 98.7% Electric Share

Norway's Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) reported that battery-electric vehicles reached 98.7% of new passenger car registrations in August 2026 -- the highest EV market share ever recorded in any significant automotive market -- up from 96.9% a year earlier. Of 13,451 new cars registered, only 30 were gasoline and 64 diesel. The record came even as Norway's EV purchase incentives were trimmed during the year, and as the country's EV fleet passed one million vehicles. Volkswagen led August brand rankings (10.8% share, ID.4 the top-selling model) ahead of Toyota, while Chinese brands Xpeng and BYD together more than doubled their combined share year-on-year to 11.4%. Electric vans also hit a record 44.9% share of the month's van registrations.
