Germany Surpasses 128 GWp Solar Capacity, Hitting 2026 Target Ahead of Schedule

Germany's nationwide installed photovoltaic capacity passed 128 gigawatts-peak (GWp) in August 2026, fulfilling the statutory 2026 expansion target set under the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) ahead of schedule, according to an analysis by the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar) based on Bundesnetzagentur market master data, announced August 20. More than 6 million solar installations are now operating in Germany; solar supplied around one-fifth of the country's net electricity generation in 2025. BSW-Solar warned that hitting the next EEG milestones -- 172 GWp by 2028 and 215 GWp by 2030 -- will require sustaining roughly 20 GWp of annual additions, above the ~17.5 GWp installed in each of the past two years.
