Onboard Ship Carbon Capture Wins EU ETS and IMO Recognition in World-First Regulatory Milestone

Singapore's Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) announced on July 22, 2026 that its Project CAPTURED onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) demonstration secured two regulatory milestones. Verified CO2 captured onboard ships can now be deducted from a vessel's EU ETS emissions obligations, provided the CO2 is permanently mineralized. Separately, a proposal submitted to the International Maritime Organization's MEPC 84 won in-principle support for recognizing carbon mineralization as a permanent CO2 storage pathway. Project CAPTURED previously completed the world's first end-to-end demonstration of an onboard-captured, liquefied CO2 value chain -- ship-to-ship transfer, onshore transport and permanent mineralization storage -- showing GHG savings of 7.9% across the full carbon value chain. The milestones strengthen the regulatory and commercial case for onboard carbon capture in shipping, a sector responsible for roughly 3% of global emissions and considered hard to electrify.
