Copenhagen Climate Ministerial 2026 Sets Electrification as Core COP31 Priority Ahead of Antalya
The fifth Copenhagen Climate Ministerial convened on May 20–21, 2026, with climate ministers from major economies setting priorities for COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye (November 2026). Turkish COP31 Presidency head Murat Kurum called for dramatically expanding electrification across all sectors of the economy. IRENA presented a global goal to increase electricity's share of final energy to 35% by 2035 — up from approximately 22% today. Australia and EU officials agreed to work on a new joint global electrification initiative. IPCC Chair Jim Skea delivered a state-of-the-climate address. Key outcomes include agreement to make electrification the cornerstone of COP31 deliverables and to strengthen the Global Stocktake's electrification tracking mechanisms.
