30 MW Barrow Green Hydrogen Project Reaches FID — Plug Power Electrolyzers to Cut Kimberly-Clark Emissions 50%
The 30 MW Barrow Green Hydrogen Project in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria (UK) achieved final investment decision, with Plug Power supplying six 5 MW GenEco PEM electrolyzers. Operated by a Schroders Greencoat / Carlton Power partnership, the facility will use renewable electricity to produce approximately 100 GWh per year of green hydrogen for Kimberly-Clark's nearby manufacturing site (maker of Andrex and Kleenex brands), cutting the site's natural gas consumption by up to 50% and reducing CO2 emissions by 18,300 tonnes per year. The project demonstrates the industrial decarbonization use case for green hydrogen in hard-to-electrify manufacturing processes, one of the key applications highlighted in net-zero scenarios from the IEA and IPCC.
