Africa Forward Summit: Kenya and France Sign Clean Energy Agreements, Launch Luxury Air Travel Levy for Climate Finance
The Africa Forward Summit convened in Nairobi on May 11–12, 2026, bringing together African heads of state, European leaders, and international partners to advance Africa's green industrialization agenda. Kenyan President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron witnessed the signing of 11 bilateral agreements spanning wind power, nuclear energy, rail, digital, and sustainable agriculture. Kenya — which already generates over 90% of its electricity from renewables (geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar) — co-hosted alongside France to showcase Africa's clean energy potential. A coalition of 8 nations including France, Kenya, Barbados, Somalia, Benin, Sierra Leone, and Antigua and Barbuda pushed a bold proposal for a 1% levy on luxury air travel tickets (business and first class) to raise up to €187 billion globally for climate finance in developing nations. France and Kenya co-chair the Global Solidarity Levies Task Force driving this initiative. The summit's green industrialization agenda emphasized regional renewable energy market integration, geothermal development, and expanding clean energy access across Sub-Saharan Africa.
