60 Deputies Ask Kast to Pardon Carabineros and Military Convicted Over 2019 Estallido
Sixty deputies from the governing coalition (Partido Republicano, UDI, RN, Evópoli, Partido Nacional Libertario, and Partido de la Gente) signed a letter urging President Kast to grant individual pardons ('indultos particulares') to Carabineros and armed forces personnel convicted for actions tied to their duties during the protests that began October 18, 2019. The same day, a group of senators launched a 'Bancada por el Indulto General' pushing for a broader general pardon covering Carabineros, the armed forces, the PDI, and Gendarmería — a push that could benefit more than 100 already sentenced and end proceedings against roughly 700 more uniformed personnel still facing charges. Kast, who criticized predecessor Gabriel Boric's December 2022 pardons of 12 estallido-linked convicts during his campaign, has said each case would be evaluated individually since taking office March 11, 2026.
