Allende Given State Funeral — Buried with Full Presidential Honors
On the 20th anniversary of his 1970 election victory, Salvador Allende's remains are exhumed from a secret grave in Viña del Mar and given a full state funeral in Santiago. President Aylwin attends. Allende had been buried in an unmarked grave since September 1973; his family was only permitted to hold a private burial. The state funeral is a symbolic repudiation of the coup and a recognition of Allende's legitimate democratic legacy.
