Pinochet Dies Under House Arrest — 300+ Criminal Cases Pending

| Chile 1970–1990

Augusto Pinochet dies of a heart attack on December 10, 2006 — International Human Rights Day — at age 91, while under house arrest with more than 300 criminal cases pending against him. He is never convicted of any crime. After his London arrest weakened his immunity protections, Chilean courts had stripped him of immunity and issued multiple indictments, but proceedings were repeatedly suspended due to health. His death triggers simultaneous public celebrations and military mourning in Chile.
