Patricio Aylwin Wins Presidential Election — Democracy Restored
Patricio Aylwin of the Concertación coalition wins Chile's first democratic presidential election since 1970, capturing 55.2% of the vote. Aylwin had been a key anti-Allende politician in 1973 who later became an opponent of Pinochet. His coalition — an alliance of center and left parties — wins a majority in Congress. The election is considered free and fair by international observers. Pinochet retains the position of Army Commander-in-Chief under the 1980 constitution.
