Human Rights Watch: Spain Must Urgently Fix 'Humanitarian and Rights Crisis'

Human Rights Watch says thousands of migrants and asylum seekers have lived in a legal vacuum on Ceuta's streets and beaches for nearly three weeks, without adequate shelter, food or sanitation, and exposed to sexual violence, and calls on Spain to urgently mobilise resources for humane, orderly management and to guarantee access to asylum procedures. 'Despite the challenging situation, Spain should quickly mobilize sufficient resources to ensure humane and orderly management of the crisis for the good of migrants and Ceuta residents alike,' says Judith Sunderland, HRW's senior associate director for refugee and migrant rights. The statement lands the day after police began clearing the El Trampolín beach camp.
